A lot of people in my industry make fun of New Year’s Resolutions. Honestly, you can’t blame them. Year after year, you see crowded gyms all over town during the first couple weeks of January. By Valentine’s Day the number of people attending the gym regularly is cut in half. Most of those people that showed up on the first Monday in January are nowhere to be seen.
I’m often asked why that is. It’s simple. A lot of people are motivated at the first of the year. They are looking for a fresh start to create a new person within themselves.
Motivated to lose weight and get in shape they head to the gym in the masses. Only to get there and not be sure that what they are doing is even the right thing to do. Nobody is there to help them past a quick tour of the facility and a swipe of their card. After a quick pat on the back, they are sent out to figure it all out on their own.
Once on the gym floor, they are intimidated by all the equipment. Overwhelmed by all the gym regulars looking at them funny and whispering as they walk by confused. Most of the time they end up on the treadmill so they can just get a feel for the place and watch to see what others are doing.
Resiliently they come back a few more times thinking each time will be different. It usually ends up worse. Thinking if I could just find that real polite sales person that got me started here, they will help me. Unfortunately, that person always seems occupied or just doesn’t seem to have the time to answer any questions.
At home they spend time on the internet getting more and more confused as they search the web looking for a workout routine. Not to mention the overload on what diet they should be on. This confusion, lack of accountability and motivation leads to frustration, anger and despair.
Next thing you know, the motivated person that boldly walked through the gym door in January has grown to hate the thought of going to that place. They give up because what once felt like an attainable goal now appears to be a hopeless cause.
That’s why I started GetRight! Personal Training in Anderson, SC. The Holiday Season is here. Don’t look at this time of year as an excuse not to exercise and watch what you eat. No. I am not telling you that you shouldn’t enjoy the holidays. I am actually encouraging you to enjoy them!
What I am hoping you will take from this is that it is much better to exercise regularly and follow a structured nutritional plan than to use this time of year as an excuse to just let yourself go and have regrets throughout the holiday season. Cherish the times with your family and friends. Enjoy the great meals and festivities. Don’t just say, “Well the holidays are here. There’s no need in me trying to diet or exercise right now. I’m going to be eating good over the holidays.”
See, we only have so many dinners, parties or get-togethers to attend. If you are following a structured nutritional plan and exercising regularly, these times won’t affect you negatively. You won’t “pack on” that “holiday weight”. Don’t be one of those people that says, “I am not even going to try and eat right or exercise right now. I’m just going to enjoy the holidays and go on a diet after the first of the year.”
Most of the time people with that attitude end up gaining an extra 10-20 pounds during the holidays and enter the first of the year depressed and defeated. If you eat healthy 80% of the time and exercise regularly, you can actually lose weight and be able to eat what you want at your holiday gatherings. Feel good and enjoy the holidays. Start NOW!

A lot of people want to change their bodies. Lose weight, tone up, get in shape, get ripped, whatever they call their goals. Most want to transform their body into the body they’ve long dreamed of having.
The first thing that has to change to make that happen is changing your mind. You have to embrace the changes that you will need to make to be successful. Most people look at dieting and exercise as a torturous chore. They despise the thought of “dieting” and look at exercise equipment as some type of demonic torture devices.
I encourage you to change your thought patterns. Find a nutritional program that you can commit to. Don’t look at it as punishment. Like you are giving up all that you love. Find foods you enjoy. Implement variety in your diet. Look forward to trying new recipes and ways of preparing food.
Take a new outlook on exercise. Find a training program that motivates you. Look forward to doing better daily. Challenge yourself. Make a game out of it. Never look at training as something you have to do. See it as something you get to do.
If you allow yourself to continue looking at diet and exercise as something you hate and dread, it will be torturous and most likely; you won’t be successful in your transformation. Embrace the change. Change the way you view the process and enjoy it. Start telling yourself that you can’t wait to get to the gym today. You are going to have so much fun there. You will do one more rep than you did last time or you’ll go 5 more minutes on the bike. Whatever the case may be. If you look forward to it with positivity, it will be a lot better experience and you will more than likely stick to it.
Same thing with your diet. If you only dwell on not eating that large double stuff crust pizza, you will more than likely not stay committed to your plan. But, if you look forward to trying new recipes or enjoying healthier foods that you have found, odds are you can stay committed and be successful.
I promise you it will be worth it. Embrace the change. Enjoy the journey and fall in love with the new you! If I can do it; YOU CAN TOO!!!
I hear people say it all the time. “I need to lose 30 pounds, but I just can’t seem to get motivated.” Or, “I know what to do so I can lose this weight and wear my clothes again, but I just can’t seem to get motivated.” Even, “I know I would feel so much better if I just lost some of this weight, but I just can’t seem to get motivated.”
The problem isn’t that you can’t get motivated. Your motivation is there. It’s inside you. Looking at you in the mirror every day. You just feel overwhelmed by it all. You are automatically thinking, I am going to have to cut out this. I am going to have to run my butt off.
So then, you start to make excuses and procrastinate. “Well Bob’s retirement party is Saturday. No need in even thinking about starting before then.” “I’m not going to have the time to exercise 3 hours a day. I might as well just forget about it.” “The holidays are right around the corner. I will just wait til the first of the year.”
I am encouraging you to stop comparing yourself to a marathon runner, when you haven’t walked a half mile in years. If you just start now; doing something; take the stairs at work. Park further away from the entrance. make a couple better eating decisions today than normal. Start and the motivation will build. Gain some momentum and watch your motivation start to engulf you.
Visualization is a GREAT motivational developer. Imagine yourself how you want to look in a certain outfit. Then, go buy that outfit ion the size and cut it is in your vision. Hang it in a spot that you see every day and BELIEVE you will wear it with pride when you reach your goal. Now you are motivated. So just “Make It Happen”!
